My third tutoring session was with a student named Turki, who is also from Saudi Arabia. Turki was very kind and offered me pringles before the session began while making small talk about his journey to FSU and why he wanted to learn English. I find that it is important to get to know your tutees personally before diving into English material. It helps me to see where they are level wise, as well as see how motivated they are with their learning. Turki is definitely a very focused student, he was getting overtly upset about his multitude of errors and I could tell he was determined to improve. He asked that I bring in materials to work with that will help him practice these skills, and I plan to do so next session. I like working with Turki because it is a mutual challenge, as I push him to be a better student, he is pushing me to be a better teacher!
My next tutoring session was with Turki. We met at the Starbucks on Tennessee Street, the usual spot, and started the session with a causal conversation about life and his short term English goals. He said he found the CIES classes to be helpful, but also distracting. He said he thinks he's gotten the most out of his classes and that it would be more productive for him to study on his own. Where I don't completely agree with his logic, it is his life and I trust his decision making. For this session he brought his own material that he wanted to focus on. This time it was a reading passage that I even found to be quite difficult, and I was once again impressed by his far reach in practice and ability. The reading passage was accompanied by a set of numerous comprehension questions that we reviewed and answered together. The qu...
