For
my second observation of a class, I sat in on a level-four reading class. I
observed this class right after the level-two grammar class, so it was
interesting to see the difference in level amongst the students. In this class,
the students already had quite a command of English. In fact, some students
were even frustrated that the class was a little too easy!
This class was not quite as active as the first class as
the group had already started working on texts. The teacher did not involve me
quite as much, but I got to observe a lot and it was really interesting. Since
this was such an advanced level class, students were not just reading, but also
discussing opinions on the pieces. The question ‘what do you think of this’ was
used a lot more than ‘what does this mean’. I definitely thought this was a
good method because it more closely resembled real conversation instead of just
recalling certain grammatical concepts. That is something I would like to make
sure I am doing with my future students, encouraging them to produce English in
as practical a way as possible as often as possible.
